Florence-based duo Out Run return with one of their most affecting releases yet, 'Gray Cloud.' The track marks the latest chapter in their evolving “80s 3.0” aesthetic, where atmospheric electronics blend with raw emotional clarity.
Built around the image of a cloud that never clears, 'Gray Cloud' distills the quiet heaviness of depression into something stark and deeply human. Vocalist Ginevra Abbarchini delivers one of her most vulnerable performances to date, her voice almost trembling over muted synths as she sings of being unheard, unseen, and stuck inside a storm that won’t move on. The refrain - “still in a gray cloud, caught in a gray cloud” - loops like a thought that refuses to release its grip.
“This song doesn’t resolve, because real pain doesn’t always resolve,” the band explain. “'Gray Cloud' ends where it begins: inside the storm.”
Musically, Out Run lean into restraint. There’s no big drop, no euphoric swell, just a slow, enveloping drift of reverb, fog-like pads, and gently pulsing electronics that echo the emotional exhaustion at the song’s core. The result is cinematic in scale yet intimately close, reminiscent of Daughter, London Grammar, and Beach House.
Formed in 2022 by Abbarchini and multi-instrumentalist Lawrence Fancelli, and joined by producer Niccolò Messeri on selected works, Out Run channel the neon melancholy of 80s nostalgia into modern indie-electronic storytelling. Their breakout singles 'Monster' and 'Hideaway' surpassed one million streams within a year, quickly marking them as rising voices in the scene.
