Florida-based Blunts & Blondes burst into the dance music scene as a dubstep producer who moshed at his own shows. Six years later, the DJ lesser known as Mike Guard is officially stepping into the hip-hop realm with his debut album. He drops his track ‘Story of a Stoner‘ off his upcoming album of the same name, on Deadbeats this Wednesday.
The track features Guard’s vocals over a musical medley of emo and rap. His auto-tuned vocals lead a chorus-supported drop and crisp dubstep beats. The lyrics go: “This is a story of a stoner, a little song about how I became a loner… a little song about how I became a stoner.” Meanwhile, the soundscape sets a high mood.
‘Story of a Stoner’ seems to artfully tell Guard’s life story. Born into a military family, Guard ended up in Jacksonville and attended several high schools due to marijuana-related incidents. He went to college in Tampa and eventually connected deeply with the local music scene, which is a mix of electronic and hip-hop.
Blunts & Blondes’ album Story of a Stoner is set to be released – you guessed it – on April 20. It’s been described as a “hip-hop forward project backboned in dubstep production.” Blunts & Blondes has played alongside icons Excision, Zeds Dead and Subtronics, and produced with GRiZ, Wiz Khalifa and Rebelution. His new LP includes collaborations with Zeds Dead, Lucii, Smokepurpp, Yung Pinch and Lil West.
Guard started teasing his new music last month, tweeting, “Album season is about to begin!” Guard released ‘4:30‘ featuring COTIS on February 23. “Time for a new chapter of the Blunts story,” he tweeted.
With ‘Story of a Stoner’, fans start really getting a sense of the unique musical direction Blunts & Blondes is taking. He’s indeed making inroads in the crossover world. ‘Story of a Stoner’ drops March 23.
