The other day, I was at a Griz pop-up set on the beach in Los Angeles. I had gone with a few friends. After dancing some, we went to the outskirts of the crowd to cool off. Then… as it often happens, the crowd went into a “whoop-whoop”. I sighed for a moment, and leaned toward my friend and told him, “Don’t tell anybody this, but every time the crowd makes that sound, I die a little inside.”
Something about that sound cheapens the legit-ness of the crowd in my mind. And I thought that I might be the only one who felt that way, but it turns out that many people agree with this idea. There is even a new petition that is circulating online to raise awareness and stop the “whoop”.
It began with John Jones, who started the petition. He uses some pretty damning language, referring to whoopers, as “pelicans” squawking. And while some music lovers find it annoying, remember, this is a shared experience. It doesn’t really matter, and no… a whoop-whoop at a set shouldn’t ruin your day.
However, I still think it’s annoying and it’s important that we can have an open discourse about such topics. Personally, the only ‘whoop’ I would ever want to hear is when the one from Bloody Beetroots – ‘Warp 1.9’ (feat. Steve Aoki). But that’s just me. Where do you stand on the polarizing “whoop”?
