Rüfüs Du Sol, stylised as RÜFÜS DU SOL and formerly known as simply Rüfüs from 2010 to 2018, is an Australian alternative dance group from Sydney, that consists of Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George and James Hunt. They joined Zane Lowe in studio on Apple Music 1 to clear up breakup rumors following comments made on-stage at their Hollywood Bowl show, reflect on their 2019 Coachella performance, discuss their creative process, and more. They also share they’d love to pen a James Bond theme song and confirm they won’t be appearing at Coachella 2023. Listen to the episode here.
When asked about the quote and subsequent rumors by Zane, Tyrone responded with: “I guess I just meant that it was the end of our chapter in LA as a unit. I just recently moved out into San Diego with my wife and son, and I’ve set up a studio here. And we’ve explored writing in separate rooms before. But for the most part we usually write best together, it’s most fun. And we’ll be doing that next year. We’re going to pick different locations across the country and hopefully a few spots in Europe and set up some little writing journeys for ourselves and make another record. […] I was just talking about our story in LA in particular. We moved over there five years ago and it very much has been our home. […] We’ve written two records in that area like Joshua Tree and LA. And it was very much home and I think we’re going to explore the rest of the world and see how that influences our music.”
Reflecting on their 2019 set: “Coachella is just one of those festivals. You see the lineups and you want to be there. And we had the opportunity to play at a really good slot. Yeah, we lucked out. And it was so special. We’d put a lot of time into that show. […]I remember with the Coachella show, every piece of the puzzle just came together and that moment and that first weekend in particular was just every expectation met and it was one of the most perfect moments in general. And the hype that Coachella brings and all of that, I guess it just all plays into this beautiful cacophony of magic. And at the moment I like that we’ve been having a year of starting again. It was very shaky at the beginning with that first Red Rock show in August and learning that performance, a musicianship again together as a band on stage has been really fun and honing in that show up until this point with the lighting and visuals to make that experience so tailored for the audience. We’re continually changing it every night
However when asked about Coachella 2023, Zane was told that the group would not be performing at the festival this iteration.
Of the many goals that were mentioned, one of them was a James Bond theme song. Given the franchise’s future, we’d hope they fulfill their dream!
Tyrone again gave the audience some valuable insights; this time on their creative process: “It never stops, really. It’s funny hearing an off year and an on year. I guess that’s just the amount of time, but it never stops. When we’re flying between shows, I’m writing words or whatever. And James is there tinkering away, making a beat. It’s never really off. It’s always on. This is what I’d be doing, whether we were in a successful band or not, I’d be spending my days making tunes and tinkering in the background.”
