A new law is cracking down hard on ticket touts

AnewpieceUKlegislationhasbeenintroducedthisweekmakingitillegaltouseautomatedbotstobulkpurchaseeventtickets. Technologythiskindhascommonlybeenusedbytoutstobuyuplargequantitiesticketstosellonatexorbitantprices.ArecentestimationassessedtheUKticketresellingbusinesstobeworth£1billionperyear,with£500millionthatnumbercreditedtomusicevents. NowunderthetermsthenewlylegislatedDigitalEconomyAct,anyonecaughtutilisingbotstoplaythesystemandexploitgenuinefanscanfaceunlimitedfines. TheMinisterforCulture,CommunicationsandCreativeIndustriesMattHancocksaid:“We’redeterminedtomakesure2018istheyearwehelprealfansgetthechancetoseetheirfavouritemusicandsportsstarsatafairprice. “We’llbeactingtostampoutthegrowingproblemtoutsmisusingtechnologytoscoopupvastnumbersticketsonlytosellthemonatrip-fprices. “Ourwork,togetherwithimprovementsbyindustry,willhelpmakethemarketmoretransparentandmeanagreatyearforBritain’sthrivingliveeventsscene.” ThelawfollowsraidsontheficesticketresellingcompaniesStubHubandViagogoinNovemberlastyearwhichresultedinfourarrestsforsuspectedbreachconsumerlawsrelatedtotickettouting.
