Captivating. That’s how I would describe this. I have more words, of course, but after listening to this Drumcode release, that’s how this article is starting off. Of course, I would expect nothing less from the eclectic Layton Giordani.
The young New Yorker hasn’t slept since his incredible release with HI-LO, ‘Rabbit Hole’ late last year. This 2022 standout marked a definitive step in Giordani’s signature sound, making its way into peak-hour sets around the world. The Techno dj/producer has impressed left and right since his release of 12-track LP Where it Begins on Drumcode. Later collaborating with Green Velvet and long-time mentor/label owner Adam Beyer, Giordani has a strong history of tasteful sonic exploration.
Now, Life Moves Fast continues Giordani’s adventurous energy into 2023.
Special, indeed. Life Moves Fast’s title track is characterized by a playful, distinctive lead in its second verse. Despite its curious tone, the pluck remains pensive, setting the haunting, driving tone of the 2-track release. As the melody leaves to give room to the peak-dancefloor-ready Techno drop, I tap my foot in anticipation of its return.
The fat, plucky quality of the bassline continues into track two. ‘Heart is King’ changes this tone with airy, downsampled chord stabs as they lead us into a crisp reverie. Elegant, yet on edge, euphoria balanced on a knife’s edge. This is the sound design of a master packaged tightly in an open, bright composition. ‘Heart is King’ is plucky but deep, subtly contrasting in direct control of its own energy.
Giordani brought this duality to light with intention. “The main focus with Heart is King was creating a dancefloor orientated track with elaborate sounds that would constantly trigger your ears while grooving from start to finish.”
We’re excited to hear more from Layton Giordani. I’ve had him on repeat all morning, and yes, my ears have been triggered.
