The two talents behind the recent ‘Starting Fires’ single have kindly joined us for an interview this week. Stavros and Alec Chambers are wonderfully gifted and clearly able to write a highly catchy melody together. We got them both together to hear more about their backgrounds and what they are currently working on.
Thank you both for joining us! How long have you been making music for? What initially inspired you to start?
Stavros: I started taking classes when I was 5 years old. My first instrument was a Yamaha keyboard that my Dad got me. My family owned a rock club, so I grew up around music – even while I was in my mothers womb she would DJ at the club, so I guess it’s safe to say that I was born into music.
Alec: I can remember wanting to do music for a career since I was 13. I knew it was what I wanted and never wanted to know anything else. My dad was a big influence on me in the beginning. He played guitar and got me my first one.
How do you feel your sounds and influences have changed along the way since you started, and are they constantly evolving?
S: My sounds and influences have changed drastically throughout my life. I began playing in heavy metal bands when I was 14. I was in three different bands – playing the drums in one, singing in another and playing guitar in the third. Around that time I also started using Cubase where I would experiment with more electronic or orchestral sounds. In 2011 I moved to NYC with my family, where I was forced to learn how to produce since I didn’t have bands to jam with.
A: I think my sound/influences are evolving all the time. Feelings and emotions are constantly changing – which means the music is changing. I’m always growing in what I do and I don’t think it will ever stop.
How would you sum up each other’s musical styles?
S: Alec is an amazing vocalist and writer with such a unique voice. His vocal delivery and lyricism makes you feel the music on a deeper level. He is also a musician, so his melodies and performance always cut through.
A: Stavros – badass producer ! Pop, dance, electronic, EDM. The guy can literally do anything. He’s amazing. My style is pop… emotional pop stuff.
Whose music are you particularly feeling right now?
S: I love records that pop up here and there on the radio or something that a friend discovers and brings in. Also the new Julia Michaels stuff sound great!
A: Right now I am listening to a lot LANY, Lauv and blackbear.
Are you both happy with how the track turned out?
S: The song was so inspiring to me and it made the production flow, very effortless. Both us were leaning towards a stronger drop after the chorus and we are both very happy with how the track turned out overall! Being able to go back and forth with Alec about the production and top-line was extremely helpful and made the process easy.
A: Yes! The inspiration for ‘Starting Fires’ came from a classic heartbreak story – but a unique twist on trying to get her back. Stavros and I had written together before and had been friends for a long time. We had been wanting to do a song together for a while. He called me and I said yes!
Could we expect any more collaborations from you two in the future?
S: Most definitely! Alec is a beast in the studio and we have great chemistry.
A: Absolutely.
What do you both want to achieve this year and why?
S: I want to continue producing records for amazing artists around the world while releasing more music as an artist myself. I just love being in the studio, whether its writing for my own project or for someone else’s. As long as I am making music, I am achieving my goals.
A: Happiness and fulfillment. I want to make the most music this year that I ever have. The most content for all my platforms. That would make me happy and also make my fans happy!
