[Event Review] The Cityfox Odyssey NYE & NYD Marathon Event

The Cityfox Experience hosted its 3rd successful Cityfox Odyssey NYE & NYD event taking underground music fans on a 27-hour journey. The event kicked off at 9pm on New Year’s Eve and didn’t shut down until 12am on New Year’s day. This party was the spot where NYC techno and house lovers wanted to end their 2019 and ring in the new decade.

The Cityfox Odyssey production transformed Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner into a festival playground. There was a total of 4 music rooms featuring the biggest lineup to date. In-between each of the music rooms, there was comfort hang out areas set up. In the common areas, it was extremely dark and felt as if you were transported to an alternate underground universe.

Prior to the event, I was most excited to see UK house favorite Hot Since 82, rising stars Artbat, and the infamous Âme and Dixon go B2B. Never having seen these artists, I had pretty high expectations for each of their sets.

Most of the heavy hitters played on the main stage of the festival, also known as The Portal room. UK Anjunadeep artist Marsh kicked off the night and eased the crowd into the long night/day ahead. Legends Sasha & John Digweed took over to count attendees down into the New Year and continue the momentum for their extended 4 hour set. I’ve seen them play before, but their chemistry is perfect each time. Sasha & Digweed’s set was the main set most attendees watched for their Cityfox Odyssey experience. However, I was surprised to see how many attendees were able to rally and marathon into New Year’s Day.

In the second largest room, The Void, the Fideles duo and Ida Engberg played great sets. The production in this room was part of Arrival, the art exhibit that took place as part of the festival, and made for a great stage/room set up.

The Void

Artbat exceeded my expectations and absolutely blew the crowd away. Just when the crowd was starting to die down around 6am, attendees got a second wind. These guys have been rising on the scene for the past year and have big things in store for 2020. As soon as their set was over, they headed right to the airport for their Zamna Tulum New Year’s Day show.

Later in the afternoon, Hot Since 82 and Jamie Jones took everyone through a majority of New Year’s Day. Both sets were awesome, but was surprised that Hot Since 82 didn’t play many of his popular tracks. Jamie Jones came straight to the event from Space Miami where he opened for Solomun earlier that morning.

To close out the event, Âme and Dixon went B2B and took fans on a five and a half hour journey. The Innervisions label co-founders often go B2B for this extended period of time and somehow make the time fly by.

The Cityfox Odyssey was unlike any event I’ve ever experienced. To have some of the biggest names in techno and house music under one roof for 27-hours was absolutely incredible. This was truly an unforgettable way to end 2019 and welcome the start of a new decade.
