Game of Thrones creators are writing a new Star Wars film series

HBO’s Game Thrones series creators David Benif and D.B. Weiss have signed on to join the Star Wars universe.

Disney and Lucasfilm have announced the duo will write and produce a new series films, separate from the J.J. Abrams’ Skywalker continuation trilogy and the previously announced trilogy lead by Rian Johnson.

In a statement, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shared what she hopes the new producers bring to the Star Wars universe: “David and Dan are some the best storytellers working today. Their command complex characters, depth story and richness mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benif and Weiss also released a joint statement sharing their excitement to work on a new Star Wars story: “In the summer 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season Game Thrones is complete.”

Little is known about what Benif and Weiss plan to do with their Star Wars series, but Disney CEO Bob Iger said, "they are focused on a point in time in the Star Wars mythology and taking it from there."

The duo are currently finishing the final season Game Thrones after a few delays and are also set to write and producer a new series for HBO called Confederate. The latter project's future is now in question as it seems Benif and Weiss will be focused on Star Wars.
